I believe religion is mankind’s idea of why we exist on earth, of how we should behave ourselves and treat one another in this existence, and also but not necessarily a belief in a greater being who is creator and organizer of all things on earth and in space. Religion most always includes moral standards and codes by which human beings should live. Many religions have leaders, councils, and elder types who interpret to followers those codes and standards which came from a greater being or higher intelligence (God). As a human being I have found that I need Someone and something to believe in other than myself and my fellow human beings. I see in myself as I see in others a desire to be the best person that I can be but usually I fall way short of fulfilling this desire. Probably most all other human beings feel this way as well. We want to be upstanding people well liked, received, and honored. Yet somehow and someway we come up short. Sadly a lot of us go to all kinds of lengths to present ourselves as upright and free of having any faults. Many well known figures in history and not so well known have taken great falls from grace as a result of being perceived to be perfect or something close to it.
The religion I believe in lets me know that I am not perfect and that it’s okay, because the God at the center of my beliefs loves me unconditionally and accepts me regardless of my imperfections. It is unfortunate that a lot of religions, including my own, teach unconditional love and acceptance but are not closely adhered to by the believers. Of course I don’t believe any of us can be perfect in following to the letter what we believe in. But when more of us come to realize that no human being is better than another, this world could perhaps be a much better place for us to live.
